According to Katie, it\u2019s a gesture she\u2019s seen many times\u2014patients extending their arms or hands upward, as if trying to grasp something invisible in the space above them. \u201cYou\u2019ll literally see someone reach up,\u201d she said. \u201cIt\u2019s like they\u2019re trying to hold someone\u2019s hand, or touch something in the air.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
She explained that this is sometimes accompanied by end-of-life visions\u2014people talking to loved ones who have already passed, describing bright lights, pets, even angelic figures. \u201cThey might say, \u2018Mom is here,\u2019 or smile at a corner of the room no one else is looking at. Other times, they say nothing, but their body moves in that direction\u2014upward.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n
Though there\u2019s no medical explanation for these occurrences, they\u2019re well known in hospice circles. And far from being alarming, Katie emphasized that these experiences usually bring comfort. \u201cThey don\u2019t look scared,\u201d she said. \u201cThey look at peace.
