I was expecting a poodle. Or maybe a dainty little Yorkshire Terrier. Something elegant, something presentable<\/em>. So when my husband and son walked through the door with that\u2026 that rescue mutt<\/em>, I nearly dropped my coffee.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

She was scruffy. Too big for a lap dog, too awkward to be cute, and covered in wiry fur that stuck out in all directions like she\u2019d rolled through a hedge. My son beamed up at me, cheeks flushed, eyes glowing.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cIsn\u2019t she beautiful, Mom?\u201d he said. \u201cHer name is Daisy. She picked me<\/em>.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Daisy wagged her tail like she understood. Her big eyes locked on mine, hopeful.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I couldn\u2019t even respond.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I mean, what was I supposed to do\u2014walk her down the street like she was some kind of fashion statement? \u201cOh yes, this is Daisy. She\u2019s\u2026 um\u2026 unique.\u201d What would I say when friends asked what breed she was?<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe\u2019s a rescue,\u201d I\u2019d have to admit. The word tasted like vinegar on my tongue.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

By midnight, I\u2019d made my decision.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Iwas going to return the dog.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Once he was asleep, I\u2019d quietly load her into the car and drive back to the shelter. Leave a note, maybe. Or tell the staff it didn\u2019t work out. It happens. No one would blame me. Not really.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I waited until the house was quiet. I slipped on my shoes. Grabbed the leash. Opened the door to the garage.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cMom?\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

His voice stopped me cold.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I turned around. There he was. Standing at the top of the stairs, his eyes wide and shiny with tears. And behind him\u2026 Daisy, tail wagging softly, like she didn\u2019t realize she was about to be taken away.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cYou were going to take her,\u201d he whispered.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I had no words.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI heard you,\u201d he said. \u201cI heard you talking to Dad earlier. You said she was embarrassing.<\/em>\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

There was that word again. Embarrassing. And suddenly, hearing it through his voice\u2014small, cracked, and heartbreakingly honest\u2014it didn\u2019t sit the way it had in my head.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He ran to Daisy and threw his arms around her. She licked his cheek. He didn\u2019t even flinch.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cI love her,\u201d he said. \u201cAnd I thought you did too.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That broke something in me.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I hadn\u2019t seen it before\u2014hadn\u2019t seen what he saw. A dog that didn\u2019t care if her fur was uneven, if her tail had a kink, or if she didn\u2019t belong on a breeder\u2019s certificate. A dog who chose<\/em> him. Who needed him.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n

And who, in her own weird way, had saved something in him that I hadn\u2019t realized needed saving.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

I sank to my knees beside them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

\u201cShe can stay,\u201d I said, voice trembling. \u201cShe belongs here.\u201d<\/p>\n\n\n\n

He smiled through his tears, and Daisy wagged like crazy, plopping her head into my lap.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

That was three months ago.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Today, I walk Daisy down the street proudly. People still ask what kind of dog she is, and I tell them the truth.<\/p>\n\n\n\n
